AS3: Task 5: Final Evaluation (Final Draft)

I chose to create an advert for Batiste Dry Shampoo as I believed it was a good product to advertise and a good market to go into. The target audience for this product is young females aged between 16-25 as they are the ones who would be most likely to buy the product. The selling point for our advert was reality and repetition as we believed that it would realistically advertise the product as well as engage the audience, as it is a day-to-day situation that our target audience can relate to.

Once we had filmed and edited our advert, we needed to evaluate it. In order to do this, we needed to get in-depth audience feedback. The point of this was so that we knew how to improve our advert. To get the qualitative feedback, I held a focus group. This was useful because it allowed me to gain a wealth of feedback and to ask further questions if needed; so that I had more information. In my focus group I asked questions like "Did you like my advert? If not, why?" and "If you could improve any part of my advert, what would you improve?" I asked this because it allowed me to understand, in detail, why they would improve my advert and what they would improve. It also allowed me to understand what others thought of my advert.

From the audience feedback I can see that the majority of people liked my advert and they said that they would buy the product. All of them said that they would rate my advert around an 8 or 9 out of 10. When I asked what improvements I could make to my advert, they all said that I should smile or pull some sort of facial expression when applying the product to my hair, but this was the only dislike that was mentioned. I didn't get any surprising comments. Additionally, I think that the questions I asked were good questions, this is because they were useful and they allowed me to gain a sufficient amount of feedback.  However, if I could carry out my audience feedback again I would ask more questions and I would ask them to expand on their answers more. This is because I do not feel like I got as much feedback as I could have. I would also try to get more people in my focus group as their were only two people which means that I didn't have enough varied opinions. I needed more criticism so that I could thoroughly understand what was not great about my advert and how to improve on that.

My opinion of the advert is that it successfully promotes the product and that it highlights the main use of the product without wasting time. Also, it relates to the everyday life of our target audience. If I could improve my advert, I would edit the shots a little better so that the advert runs more smoothly and I would also respond to the audience feedback as I agree with what they said; I could smile when I apply the product to my hair. I could also try to improve the lighting as I think that some of the shots, particularly the ones where I am spraying the product in my hair, are a little dark.

I think that my advert is technically good because we used a tripod throughout which means that the shots are steady. Also we used a mixture of long distance shots and mid shots, which makes the advert more entertaining and more interesting. Additionally, the camera movements are smooth and I think that the framing was also good. The advert makes it very clear what the product is that we are trying to sell and I think that it successfully sells the product. I believe that it was a good idea as the advert relates to the lives of our target audience and shows the use of the product clearly. Also, it is not too complicated, It shows the point of the product without wasting time.

The overall improvements I could make are to my advert things like improving the lighting when filming. I could do this by adjusting the natural and artificial lighting so that the shots are not as dark. I could consider filming in another room with better lighting. Furthermore, I could improve the mise-en-scene as I don't like the surroundings in some of the shots, I think that they make the advert appear a little unattractive. Additionally, I could use the audience feedback I got when I carried out my focus group. For example, when I spray the product to my hair, I could smile or pull another facial expression rather than just a straight face. Also, I would edit the shots a little better so that my advert runs more smoothly.

After carefully watching the advert, I can say that I am happy with it. Overall, I believe that my advert has achieved my aim to sell the product and the audience enjoyed it. My advert is realistic and it is also entertaining. I think that the advert was successful and it appealed to my target audience. Even though I could make some improvements, I am still pleased with my finished advert.

AS3: Task 3: Sources Of Information

Before I could begin to film my advert, I ensured that I had carefully done all of the pre-production documents necessary. This meant that I wouldn't miss anything vital when filming the advert. When planning, I created two storyboards, each with a different idea. I also carried out thorough market and audience research.

Proposal

The proposal is an important part of the pre-production stage. In the proposal, I outlined the ideas for my advert and what was needed from the cast and crew. I explained how I got my ideas through the use of market and audience research and stated how it was different to other adverts for the same/similar products. I found this document useful as it provided structure for my advert. I could have improved my proposal by explaining my ideas more and justifying why I wanted to use certain shot types or editing techniques.

Storyboard

Creating a storyboard is important as it lays out the order that everything will take place and gives an idea of how the advert will look when it is complete. I used the storyboard to plan out my advert shot by shot and to make notes for each stage of the advert. The storyboarding was useful as it helped me decide how I would film and edit my advert.  It allowed me to see which shots would work and acted as a guideline when filming my advert. I could improve this by following the storyboard exactly which I didn't do. My advert is slightly different to the idea from the storyboard.

Shooting Schedule and Shot List

Having and shooting schedule and shot list is imperative as it is a good way of organising the shots and it helps us to effectively plan out our time so that we get everything done. It was useful when creating my advert as it helped us to stay on track and provided structure to our advert. However, I found the shot list much more useful than the shooting schedule as the shooting schedule told us basic things that we already knew such as the location. I could improve this by adding more notes to the shot list to improve the standard of my advert.

Location Visit and Risk Assessment

Planning the filming location was important as we needed to ensure that there was enough space to film and that we would have permission to film there. We included a map of the area showing how to get there by bus and by foot. This is important as I needed to make sure that the cast and crew knew how to get to the location otherwise it would have caused problems and would have wasted potential filming time. I also included a risk assessment which ensured that all the potential risks were covered. This meant that we would know how to prevent accidents and what to do in the case that an accident did occur. In the risk assessment, I noted down all the potential risks and then calculated the likelihood and risk level. I was then able to manage the risks to ensure the safety of the cast and crew. However, I could improve the risk assessment by being more precise with the risk level  .

Contact Details and Production Budget

As I am just a student, the cast and crew details were not that important. This is because they were all students from my class and the filming location was within walking distance from the school. However, it was still important because if someone was ill or couldn't make it, then they could let me know so that I could make other arrangements. Additionally, we set ourselves a budget of £1000 to cover any potential damage or loss to the equipment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I think that the pre-production planning is very important and I found it very useful when creating my advert. I ensures that everything runs smoothly and goes according to plan. In my opinion, I found that the storyboard, shot list and risk assessment were the most useful documents. They covered the most important factors of filming and helped me to organise the shots. To improve my pre-production for the future, I would make the storyboard more precise and cover the risk assessment in more detail.

AS3: Task 2: Screening/Focus Group

The questions I asked for my screening were:

1. Did you like my advert? If not, why?
    -"I did yeah"
    -"Yeah"

2. Does it successfully sell the product and would you buy it?
-"Yeah I would buy it, it highlights the product throughout the advert"
   -"Yeah"

3. If you could improve any part of my advert, what would you improve?
-"When you are applying the product to your hair, smile, pull expressions"
   -"Yeah, pull expressions"

4. What would you rate my advert out of 10?
-"I would rate it an 8 or a 9 because its quite good"
   -"8.5"

I decided to use a focus group to get feedback from my advert because it is a good way of getting qualitative feedback that is easy to understand and improve upon. Advantages of using a focus group are that it allows me to gain a wealth of detailed feedback and to ask further questions if needed; so that I have more information. Also, it saves more time than doing individual interviews. The disadvantages of using a focus group are that they can be difficult to encourage a range of people to participate; my focus group consisted of just 2 people. Furthermore, as they are self-selecting, they may be biased. They can also be difficult to analyse if there is a lot of feedback given and you have to write down every comment, which means that I could miss something. On the whole, my focus group thought that my advert was good and they all had the same opinion. If I was to do it again, I would ask my focus group to expand on their answers so that I had more feedback and more information to analyse.

AS2: Task 6: Pre-production

Proposal
Prepared by
Dannielle and Aisha

  • The aim of our advert is to get people to buy Batiste Dry Shampoo
  • Our target audience is females between the ages of 16-25
  • (Dull colour) The character is laying in bed, the alarm goes off, character turns alarm off and then walks to the wardrobe
  • Camera cuts to the character being dressed
  • It then cuts to the character looking into the mirror at their hair and looking displeased
  • The actress will then look at a watch
  • They will then spray the dry shampoo in their hair; as they do this, the colour will brighten to emphasise the effect of the dry shampoo
  • This will switch to the character in three different attires to portray three different days
  • Then the character will place the product into her bag and then walk out of the door in the last attire. This is where the advert will end

Potential problems and how to overcome these problems:

-There are no problems or dangers associated with the location for my advert as it is not in public

-At most, the only problem we will encounter is an issue with the lighting – too dark or too light. If this happens then I will have to adjust natural and artificial lighting accordingly
